ipisi magazine & its creator Simon Moss

Author: Youth 2 Youth

A new youth mag has hit the streets - it's called ipisi (pronounce it however you want - it's that cool), and it aims to connect, empower and involve young people in their communities by providing them with accurate information on issues they care about, and opportunities to take action.

Hailing from the leafy eastern suburbs of Melbourne is ipisi's creator, Simon Moss, who freely describes himself as "an avid member of the mass of young people disenfranchised by the manner in which the world is operated". He's also a student @ Melbourne Uni studying Arts/Science and is involved in his local community with youth issues and awareness.

Here's how ipisi came about…

"I want to help create a more livable world, piece by piece. Through ipisi we're creating a world in which young Australians play an active, important and recognised role in creating and effecting positive change in fields of social, cultural and economic development and entrepreneurship. We aim to achieve this through improved communication and interaction between active young Australians and the community, and through the support, encouragement and promotion of youth-driven and -oriented initiatives. We're also non-profit and youth-run."

"The word "ipisi" is actually just made-up, it's a nonsense word that's been ascribed meaning coz there's so many words out there already that people already associate different meanings to, we wanted something fresh."

"My friend, Tim Bence, and I started the mag coz we wanted other young people to think about important issues and how they relate to society."

"I also wondered how the same spirit of creating positive change that existed in Taking it Global (www.takingitglobal.org) could be created and fostered more locally amongst young Australians. And so the project was born as a merger of a lot of young people's ideas."

Five months later, the idea is now a reality as dozens of young Australians got involved in the project. The first issue was launched last month and they're gearing up ready to expand!
