Training Games
Author: Youth
2 Youth.
Many of us, perhaps during schooling,
have participated in some sort of training game before.
Perhaps it was a simulation, role play, quiz or brainteaser.
Maybe you had to use your initiative or perhaps your
communication skills or practice good teamwork? Many
businesses now use training games to achieve learning
outcomes in these same areas.
There are variety of different
types of games. You should choose a training game that
is right for you by what it achieves (learning outcomes)
and whether the activity appears suitable for your staff.
These different types of games are largely dictated
by trends in the marketplace, so that one or two may
be popular at any one time, yet one of the options may
seem undesirable. For example, touchy-feely games are
not very popular at the moment as companies prefer practical
activities that are 'hands on' rather than 'emotional'
in nature.
Types of training games:
- Outdoor education
(wilderness challenges)
- Initiative games (think
creatively to solve a problem)
- Construction games
(build things)
- Brainteasers and quizzes
(test memory and knowledge)
and more!
It is important
the you choose the right timing and not just the right
situation for a training game. Participants may become
bored of the same kind of game or experience, even if
they enjoyed it the first few times.
The key to success?
Have an objective. Don't play a game to be different,
or for the sake of it, or because it's the latest innovation
in education. Back this up by allowing the group to
shape some of the direction of the exercise - the trainer
should be a facilitator and not a dominant leader.
